Tips for Adult Students/Adults Returning to School

Returning to school as an adult has a unique set of challenges compared to those of high school graduates. Learning is something that can be done at any age, and it is never too late to go back to and complete your post-secondary education.

Here are some tips to help you take this step and make your transition back into school a smooth one.

Determine Your Goals Tips for Adult Students/Adults Returning to School

Having a primary focus or goal is important to help you face the challenges of post-secondary education and to stay on track. Whether you are going back to fine tune your skills and climb the ladder within your career or you are returning to make a career change, having a clear, meaningful purpose can provide you with the motivation to keep moving forward.

Set Realistic Expectations for Yourself

If you haven’t attended school in a while, you will need to give yourself the opportunity to adjust to this new routine. Don’t be hard on yourself if you hit some setbacks at first and keep in mind that it will take you some time to get into the swing of post-secondary life.

Utilize Your Life Experience

At this point, you’ve gained a wide range of life experience that you can use to your advantage. With this life experience, you’ve learned valuable lessons that no classroom can teach. Apply what you’ve learned to your post-secondary experience. This will help you better navigate toward completing your diploma.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help

Whether you are struggling with tasks at home or having an issue grasping specific topics in class, don’t be afraid to ask fellow students or instructors for help. Ask your family to help with running errands and taking care of chores around the home. Ask a few of your classmates to share their notes or to help you study.

Discuss your coursework and assignments with your instructors to help clarify things you don’t understand or to answer any questions you may have. You can also look for resources on study skills, test taking, time management to help you improve your skills.
